Some Long Beach neighborhoods you have to explain. Los Cerritos explains itself the moment you turn onto one of its tree-lined streets. Wide lots, decades-old trees, and homes that look like they were built to last, because most of them were.

One of Long Beach's First Great Neighborhoods

Los Cerritos was established in 1906 and developed through the 1920s and 1940s as one of Long Beach's first upscale residential neighborhoods. It's compact, around 700 homes and 2,000 residents, and it was a finalist for Neighborhood of the Year in a national 2007 competition, which tells you something about how well it's held onto its character.

The architecture is the real draw. Craftsman, Tudor, Colonial Revival, Spanish, Prairie, Cape Cod, and midcentury ranch homes all sit within blocks of each other, especially along Country Club Drive. In 1929, architect Kirtland Cutter designed three award-winning homes here, and the neighborhood has been used repeatedly as a filming backdrop because it looks the part of an established American neighborhood without any set dressing needed.

Virginia Country Club

The Virginia Country Club anchors the neighborhood's western edge, an 18-hole golf course dating back to 1909 with a clubhouse and dining facilities. It's one of the older private clubs in the region, and homes along and near the course carry some of the highest price tags in the neighborhood.

Schools

Los Cerritos Elementary serves the neighborhood directly, with students moving on to Hughes Middle School and Long Beach Polytechnic High School, one of the most recognized public high schools in the city for both academics and its performing arts and athletics programs. Family buyers looking for established schools with real track records tend to take Los Cerritos seriously for this reason alone.

What Everyday Life Looks Like

Los Cerritos is quiet in a way that surprises people who assume all of central Long Beach is dense and busy. Wide, tree-lined streets, generous lot sizes, and a real sense of privacy despite being minutes from Bixby Knolls, the 405, and downtown. Los Cerritos Park anchors the neighborhood's community side, and the historic Rancho Los Cerritos site sits just across the neighborhood's edge, a restored 1860s adobe ranch house with gardens that's open for tours most days of the week, free to visit.

It's a family-oriented, low-turnover neighborhood. Homes here don't come up constantly, and when they do, they tend to draw people who've been waiting for a specific street or a specific kind of house.

Where the Market Stands

Los Cerritos carries a Redfin Compete Score of 73, "very competitive," among the more competitive pockets of Long Beach right now. The median sale price sits around $841,000, down from last year, and homes are going pending in about 45 days on average. Hot listings move faster, closing near or slightly above list price and going pending in around 33 days, and multiple-offer situations aren't unusual, some with waived contingencies. It's a market that rewards buyers who are fully prepared to move the moment the right listing appears.

Is Los Cerritos Worth a Look
